If you don’t know what that Shortcuts app on your iPhone or iPad is then boy have you been missing out. Shortcuts (previously Workflow) is basically an app full of, you guessed it, shortcuts to functions your iPhone/iPad can complete.
There is a gallery full of pre-made shortcuts to choose from, simply have a scroll through and add one that sounds useful to you. For example there are shortcuts such as Reading Mode which when used will turn on Do Not Disturb, enable Dark Mode, open your preferred playlist and your reading app of choice. Pretty cool huh? Alternatively you can create your own shortcuts, which is pretty awesome and almost limitless really. If the functionality is there you can probably create a shortcut for it. Now some apps don’t support it just yet but a lot do so the chances are that a whole bunch of your apps are going to support Shortcuts.
Today I want to share with you some of my favourite and most used shortcuts.
First and foremost is without a doubt Set Audio Output, which I have renamed on my devices to Connect to AirPods Pro. This shortcut when run automatically connects my AirPods to the device I ran the shortcut on. It’s so handy and is one I use multiple times a day.
Next is a household related shortcut called Clothes Wash Timer. This opens a small window where you type in the amount of minutes the wash cycle is going to take and then it uses Reminders to tell you when it’s finished. It’s fantastic and means I never forget about leaving any laundry in the machine.
This next one is one I actually made myself and I use it every time I sit down to write a blog post. I’ve named it Work On Blog Posts and it does a series of things when I run it. First it starts my Blogging timer on Timery, then it checks the status of my Blog habit on Streaks which allows me to either mark it as completed or leave it if I’ve already completed it. Finally it opens Ulysses, enabling me to select the blog post I want to work on or start a new one. Now this is a pretty basic shortcut that was easy to make but I’m pretty proud of it. It does all of the things I used to do manually before writing a blog post and I keep it not only in the Shortcuts widget but also on my home screen on my iPad Pro.
