I never thought I would like running, in fact cardio in general I always hated. It just bored me, no matter what I tried I never found anything I really enjoyed. Until I started Couch to 5K.
I started around 4 weeks ago so I’m about halfway through now and feeling fitter and stronger with each week. I really like how the Couch to 5K plan is set out. You start off running for only 60 seconds and gradually work your way up each week. I think this works really well because as the time you run for increases each week your stamina increases in such a way that you almost don’t even realise and then all of a sudden you’re not so out of breath anymore.
The plan has you repeat each run for that week three times, taking a days rest in between each run which I think is the key to improvement. I might only be halfway through but I’m already converted. I can’t wait to be able to go on proper runs without stopping and I know that in just a few weeks I’ll be there. There’s something so nice about getting outside and exercising, much better than working out indoors in my opinion. In fact, on the rest days in between my runs I sometimes even feel annoyed that I have to do a workout other than running. That’s how much I love it, which was definitely a shock to me at first as I really didn’t think I would like it.
If you’re looking to get into running but feel nervous about it then I really recommend downloading the Couch to 5K app. Everything is set out for you and it’s so easy to follow. Whilst you’re running you pop your headphones in and listen to the prompts and away you go. It really is so simple and I urge anyone who’s a bit apprehensive about it to bite the bullet and start because it feels amazing once you’ve completed that first run. I mean, don’t get me wrong they all feel like a great achievement but there is nothing quite like the feeling of finishing that first run. Just knowing you’ve done it, if you’re anything like me you’re almost raring to go on another immediately!
If you’re doing Couch to 5K too then let me know how you’re getting on! Always looking to chat with fellow newbie runners 🙂
